Dragonfly Dreaming - The story behind our sewing creation
Wind the clock forward now to 2019.
Lots of water has passed under the bridge. There have been some very difficult and challenging times for us both. We have changed jobs twice through restructuring and we are still working together. And we are now stepping out on our own as partners creating a new venture. • Spray painting dollies for the sleeves to add another texture and colour.
• Sewing fine wire around the linen to create individual petals of a flower to form the bustle. • The plastic tabs that hold linings and curtains together to hold the bustle onto the skirt. • Scraps of tulle, netting and bubble wrap inside the bustle to give it fullness. • Fairy lights and scraps to create a trailing dimension down the back of the train. Like the laval stage of some dragonflies, it’s taken us 5 years to fly. In this whole process, we are overcoming, reconnecting and moving forward with the blessings of our husbands, families and friends. |
In 2013 Pauline and Jenny started working together in a local patchwork shop. We both worked with fabrics in other stores for a long time and we had a real love for fabrics with texture, colour and design.
One day one of the organizers for a local event called, Fibre Octave came into the shop and asked to put up a poster advertising the event. She encouraged us both to join in and enter as she knew our love and passion. She felt we would really enjoy it and grow through it. It was a great idea and we were really excited about entering. It just didn’t happen. We were given a sample book of linen fabrics, a large box of satins, doilies and other leftover bits of tulle earlier this year… NOW, it was time to put it all together along with a bunch of dragonflies with fairy lights. The challenge was to create an Edwardian style dress with a dragonfly theme. The dragonfly would be created out of fabric using the fairy lights to create the beauty and delicacy of the wings and body. Combining the different textures, weights, colours and styles has been a lot of fun. It made us think outside the box and enabled us to explore more of our creative side incorporating things you wouldn’t normally use in making a dress. |
